APA has simplified the tapping process. Most metal parts that require tapped holes can be easily tooled to be tapped at a very high rate. If the Part is Not Tapped, the Machine Stops
Each of our precision lead-screw tapping machines has a tap stoke sensor that will not let the machine continue unless the part is fully threaded. This ensures that every part is completely tapped.
Many manufactures turn to APA is because they are experiencing difficulties tapping and drilling the parts themselves. When your in-house tapping operation isn’t creating the quality and repeatability that you require call APA. Your tapping and drilling problems will disappear. In-Die Tapping or Secondary Process?
Another common practice, besides doing the tapping and drilling in your facility, is in-die tapping. In-die tapping has definitely become more reliable and less expensive that it was just a few years ago. However, it may not be the best choice for some parts. In–die tapping still requires a lot of space in the die. Larger dies and larger presses will require more time and expense.
Tapping of holes can be temperamental. Changing the RPM can greatly improve thread quality and tap life. Slowing the in-die tapper can be tricky. It may require expensive components to be replaced on the unit. It also may require the presses stroke to be lengthened or slowed-down. Both changes can effect part quality and cycle time. This can create quality problems.
In-die tapping will require added expense from added maintenance staff and time, spare parts for the in-die tapping unit when it breaks-down, and replacement taps for when the taps wear or shatter.
